Transcoder helps in reducing data rate as well as terrestial links by using ratio of 4:1 towards BSC means 64kbit/s PCM to 16kbit/s.

In GSMTrancoder is placed in BSC but near to MSC works as
to multiplex four 64 Kbp channels to one 64 kbps
so that each channel i compress to 16 kbps so that we save our bandwidth.
Also its used for security purpose.
