Certainly a major consideration is the vital periodic overview of what the telecommunication industry has to offer today or is envisioning for tomorrow. The spectacular stands built by major manufacturers and service providers offer everyone the opportunity to evaluate the market - and even for competitors to see what their counterparts are doing.
TELECOM is also a pre-eminent meeting ground for leaders, public and private, from every professional background. High level officials and senior management, scientists, economists, engineers and lawyers from both the private and public sectors are able not only to view the hardware; but also to participate in the FORUM. The FORUM consists of two summits - the Strategies Summit, with the theme of "Breaking down barriers towards the Global Information Society" and the Technology Summit, with its theme of "Convergence of technologies, services and applications." This year the FORUM also includes special sessions, billed under the title of internet@telecom95, which will deal with the commercialization of the Internet, and joint sessions entitled "Wireless Transmission for the 21st Century", which will celebrate the birth one hundred years ago of radiocommunications.
A number of special projects are also of particular interest this year. One of these is the Programme for Development, an industry sponsored initiative that will be inviting 170 chief engineers and human resource specialists from 85 developing countries to visit the exhibition, participate in the FORUM, and take part in a special three-day workshop. Two others are the NIC pilot project, which gives 15 manufacturing companies selected from Newly Industrializing Countries (NICs) the opportunity to have stands at TELECOM 95, and the 1-in-10 "Smart House", which promotes ways in which telecommunications can improve the quality of life of people with disabilities and the elderly.
And lastly, the TELECOM Book Fair provides the opportunity for attendees to access the latest published materials in the telecommunications field, both in hard copy and on-line.
