Simply because of its size and level of visibility, TELECOM constitutes one of the most important vehicles for the ITU to pursue its primary mandate: to serve as a catalyst for advancing the technology and the growth of facilities and traffic, and to bring all sectors of the industry together to better understand the role of telecommunication as basic national and international infrastructure, and the requisites today for efficient growth, innovation and use of those infrastructures.

The World TELECOM exhibitions, held at PALEXPO in Geneva, are a natural adjunct to the activities of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). For the last 130 years the ITU has been the international home for public telecommunication providers, suppliers, and related government agencies to cooperate in advancing global communication through legislation of worldwide operating provisions, standards, and the exchange of information and expertise. The permanent offices of the ITU have been located in Switzerland since 1868 and in Geneva since 1949.
