In General public switched telephone network (PSTN) is the network of the world's public circuit-switched telephone networks, in much the same way that the Internet is the network of the world's public IP-based packet-switched networks. Originally a network of fixed-line analog telephone systems, the PSTN is now almost entirely digital, and now includes mobile as well as fixed telephones.

worldwide network that can connect any two people any where using simple equipment that a four year old child could operate. Almost all of the intelligence of the network is provided in the network (by Central Offices and such)
Control over every step of the path - we choose and provision every aspect
High quality dedicated bandwidth - dedicated even if not used (pauses, one way voice)
No cost economy of scale - Cost per link pretty much the same for one as 500
Phones are easy to use but limited in capabilities. The intelligence (and thus capabilities) is concentrated inside the network
Over $1 trillion invested into this infrastructure over 120 years
Customer quality expectations for VoIP are determined by quality of PSTN

The public switched telephone network (PSTN) is the network of the world's public circuit-switched telephone networks, in much the same way that the Internet is the network of the world's public IP-based packet-switched networks. Originally a network of fixed-line analog telephone systems, the PSTN is now almost entirely digital, and now includes mobile as well as fixed telephones.

The PSTN is largely governed by technical standards created by the ITU-T, and uses E.163/E.164 addresses (more commonly known as telephone numbers) for addressing.
