Definition: Sniffers monitor network data. A sniffer can be a self-contained software program or a hardware device with the appropriate software or firmware programming. Sniffers usually act as network probes or "snoops." They examine network traffic, making a copy of the data without redirecting or altering it. Some sniffers work only with TCP/IP packets, but the more sophisticated tools can work with many other protocols and at lower levels including Ethernet frames.

Years ago, sniffers were tools used exclusively by network engineers. Today, however, these utilities have become popular on the Internet with hackers and the merely curious. The U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has utilized a famous sniffer system called "Carnivore" to help detect illegal Internet communications.

A program and/or device that monitors data traveling over a network. Sniffers can be used both for legitimate network management functions and for stealing information off a network. Unauthorized sniffers can be extremely dangerous to a network's security because they are virtually impossible to detect and can be inserted almost anywhere

packet analyzer (also known as a network analyzer or sniffer, or for particular types of networks, an Ethernet sniffer or wireless sniffer) is computer software or computer hardware that can intercept and log traffic passing over a digital network or part of a network.[1] As data streams flow across the network, the sniffer captures each packet and eventually decodes and analyzes its content according to the appropriate RFC or other specifications

Network Sniffers are basically used for powerful network analysis. In it a well-integrated set of functions that can resolve network problems are involved. Network Sniffer can list all of the network packets in real-time from multi network card (Include Modem, ISDN, ADSL) and can also support capturing packets based on the applications (SOCKET, TDI etc). You can observe all traffic of the application that you are interested in. It is easy for you to learn and simple to use. Network Sniffer has plug-ins for different protocols such as ETHERNET, IP, TCP, UDP, PPPOE, HTTP, FTP, WINS, PPP, SMTP, POP3 and so on.
