Hi,

In the case of prepaid roaming, there are 2 ways of call flow/charging. This depends upon the type of network ie) CAMEL or Non-CAMEL network. If its a CAMEL network, then the call is recieved by the VLR and the authentication is sent to the HLR. If the subscriber profile has roaming enabled, then the VLR is authorized to connect the call. Then the call is routed to the Home IN/Prepaid/RTB system where in the call is charged then & there and the balance is deducted.During this the call is charged based upon the VLRID/Cell ID/LAC which comes in the IDP message and location based charging is done.

In case of Non-CAMEL network, for the purpose of Real Time billing, the subscriber is required to initiate a USSD query to the home network. Once the USSD query is authorized, the Home netowrks IN system initiates a call to the A party and the B Party and the charging is done in Real Time.

In the case of Postpaid Roaming, the VLR sends the query to HLR and based on the profile the call is connected. For charging purpose, the VPLMN MSC sends the CDR to the clearing house from where the CDR is sent to the home network for charging.

Now the inthing for roaming postpaid charging is called NRTRDE or Near Real Time Roaming Data Exchange, wherein the latency of charging is reduced from existing 36hours to less than 5 hours.

Prepaid roaming is easier to handle if GSM carrier uses IN / Service node etc.The "Billing" is handled on the switch itself. However In Post Paid the The carrier (roaming service provider's) network must pass on the relevant CDRs / Call details to the Home Network to the home network's mediation system which in turn will consodilate the CDRs and send i to the Billing system.
