Basically on the linux platform symbol(*) used to mark words or to indicate omission.etc it is mark with an asterisk.So it is a Greek word which is represented by a little star.

In Unix commands the asterisk symbol (*) indicates “everything.” So the command rm*.txt means delete everything or all files ending in .txt.
