LAN stands for local area network. LANs are short-range, high-speed networks typically found in schools, offices, and, more recently, homes. Over the years, there have been many types of LANs. Currently, Ethernet is king, and other than wireless technologies, it is the only LAN technology.

In general LAN is a group of computers and associated devices that share a common communications line or wireless link.It basically uses Ethernet technology.
