IP Multicasting allows IP traffic to be distributed from one source to a number of destinations or from many sources to many destinations. This technique is efficient when sending the same information to many hosts, such as a TV service that distributes content as a payload of IP (termed IPTV).

A protocol for transmitting IP datagrams from one source to many destinations in a LAN or WAN.
A system for sending IP transmissions out only one time, but allowing for multiple users to receive it. This would reduce the bandwidth required for audio and video broadcasting over the Internet, but it is not widely used yet.

The word "Multicast" is typically used to refer to IP Multicast, the implementation of the multicast concept on the IP routing level, where routers create optimal distribution paths for datagrams sent to a multicast destination address spanning tree in realtime.
