In general LAN stands for Local Area Network. It is also called small area network that consists of one building, school or can be university.

Local area network. A data network limited to a small geographic area. A LAN can be as small as a couple of devices connected on the same network or as large as a campus wide installation with numerous buildings and thousands of addressable devices on the same network.
