The Wi-Fi Alliance® (www.wi-fi.org) , a consortium made up of leading wireless equipment and software providers, places their certification on products that pass their interoperability testing, and requires that manufacturers of such products identify their products as “Wi-Fi certified™”. The Wi-Fi Alliance® is a great resource for Wi-Fi information, including a certified products listing. Wi-Fi “hot spots” have begun popping up in hotels, coffee houses, airports and fast-food restaurants, offering the public wireless access to the Internet via Wi-Fi network access. Access to these hot spots are available through a variety of means, including subscriptions through cellular phone companies, day-passes, “free access with purchase” models, or simply free wireless access.
