The polarization that is used for cellular, PCS, and enhanced specialized mobile radio (ESMR) systems is primarily vertical. There are a few, rare instances in which the polarization is not vertical, for example, a polarization diversity antenna and the horizontal polarization antenna used for increased isolation for a control station with ESMR. However, the polarization is determined by the E field used, which, in almost all wireless communication systems, means that the polarization is vertical.

Polarization is important in wireless communications systems. The physical orientation of a wireless antenna corresponds to the polarization of the radio waves received or transmitted by that antenna. Thus, a vertical antenna receives and emits vertically polarized waves, and a horizontal antenna receives or emits horizontally polarized waves. The best short-range communications is obtained when the transmitting and receiving (source and destination) antennas have the same polarization.
