The main concept of an FDMA system is similar TDMA. Main difference is in TDMA systems, the channels are broken into individual time slots for each communication instance. In FDMA systems, multiple channels, rather than multi¬ple rime slots, are used for each communication instance. Also FDMA is flexible system, but at the expense of bandwidth.

Frequency Division Multiple Access is a technique in which multiple users of a radio system are separated in the frequency domain.

Working:

FDMA works by using varying frequencies for each neighboring cell. By tuning to the frequency of a chosen cell the distributed stations can avoid the signal from other cells.
