AMPS is a first-generation cellular technology that uses separate frequencies, or "channels", for each conversation (see FDMA). It therefore requires considerable bandwidth for a large number of users. In general terms, AMPS is very similar to the older "0G" Improved Mobile Telephone Service, but uses considerably more computing power in order to select frequencies, hand off conversations to PSTN lines, and handle billing and call setup.
Advanced Mobile Phone System (AMPS) is the analog mobile phone system standard developed by Bell Labs.
AMPS cellular service operates in the 800 MHz Cellular FM band.
AMPS cellular operation consists of call origination and call termination procedures, supported by radio resource management and mobility management functions. It is important to remember that AMPS was designed as a voice-only system, which impacts how these processes are handled. Data transmission on AMPS systems is based on this circuit-switched mode of operation.
