A Service Control Point (SCP) is an interface into the phone company’s databases. It is a computer that stores information related to one or more intelligent network based services. Among the most common databases used by telephone companies are:
• 800 Number Translations Database
• Call Management Services Database (CMSDB)
• Local Number Portability (LNP)
• Line Information Database (LIDB)

• Business Services Database (BSDB)
• Home Location Register (HLR)
• Visitor Location Register (VLR)
As the Advanced Intelligent Network (AIN) services become more widespread, databases play an increasingly important role in the telephone network. They are a focus point of the AIN services functionality.
