The SIO field in an MSU basically contains the 4-bit sub service field followed by the 4-bit service indicator.And SIO field also has spare bits that can be used for priorities in the ANSI standard.

SIO(Service Information Octet) identifies the protocol type, such as SCCP,ISUP,TUP and TCAP, present in MSU.
SIO is an 8bit value broken into two parts:
4bit subservice field
4bit service indicator field
