Authentication is the process for exchanging information between a mobile station, subscriber unit, and an AUC, or authentication center, of a wireless system. The AUC is normally part of the HLR in many systems. Authentication is used to prevent fraud in a wireless network.

The process of identifying an individual, usually based on a user name and password. In security systems, authentication is distinct from authorization , which is the process of giving individuals access to system objects based on their identity.

The procedure (essentially approval) used by the approval authority in verifying that specification content is acceptable. Authentication does not imply acceptance or responsibility for the specified item to perform successfully.
