Ukrainian Mobile Communications, UMC is the first mobile operator in Ukraine with 19.8 million GSM subscribers (June 2007). In 1993, UMC was the first company to introduce mobile (cellular) services in Ukraine, initially in the analog NMT standard, then in GSM 900 and 1800. In October 2006, UMC terminated its NMT service with plans to use the spectrum for the CDMA-450 rollout. From late 2006, UMC has been developing the 3G mobile network in the CDMA-450 1xEV-DO standard. As of today, UMC network support various value-added services based on GPRS / EGPRS / EDGE and SMS / WAP / MMS / USSD. UMC is also a service provider of WiFi hotspots, mainly in large cities and airports.

Vodafone Turkey is a mobile phone operator in Turkey, currently the country's second largest. It had 13.8M 11 million active subscribers in March 07 - approximately a 25% share of the market - and claims to cover just about all urban areas with a population over 5,000. Vodafone Turkey is also available in Northern Cyprus Island (KKTC- Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus ). On December 13, 2005, it was announced that British-based mobile operator Vodafone had won a public auction to purchase Telsim, for a price of $4.5 billion. The old Telsim brand was phased out on 31 March 2007 in favour of Vodafone, in line with usual practice.

GSM-based mobile communication started in Turkey when Turkcell started its operations in February 1994. Turkcell signed a 25-year GSM license contract on April 27, 1998 with the Ministry of Transportation of Turkey. Since then, it has continuously increased the variety of its services based on mobile audio and data communication, its quality levels and as a result, number of subscribers. As of December 31, 2007, Turkcell has made 8,0 billion US dollars worth of investment in Turkey, which doesn’t include the price of the license. Again as of December 31, 2007, with its 35,4 million subscribers, Turkcell is not only the leading operator in Turkey, but is also the second biggest GSM operator in Europe in terms of subscriber numbers.
