VLAN is basically a logical concept defined on the processor of the switch and allow each and every system (device) within it to communicate with each other relatively of the physical location. Each VLAN is a separate broadcast domain and the broadcast of one VLAN cannot interfere with other VLAN's broadcast messages.
VLAN provide security, flexibility and segmentation and minimize access layer overhead traffic thus improves performance of the LAN.

Vlan basically allows end stations to be grouped together even if they are not located on the same network switch.VLAN is a technology by which we can administratively assign different ports of the same layer2 switch to different subnetworks.
