Softphones often have many of the features of corresponding IP Phones (And they often look exactly like their IP Phone counterpart). The best IP Phones utilize computer capabilities such as drag and drop calling (drag a URL or Phone number from any application on the computer (including Internet White Pages) and drop them on the application to make a call), voice to text transcription, Unimessaging with E-mail, Voice Mail and Fax, IP Business Cards, Video Phones and many other features that would be difficult or expensive to implement on a telephone.

A soft phone is a computer application that allows users to make telephone calls directly from their computer. A soft phone is most often used in conjunction with Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), a form of computer telephony. The soft phone is part of a category of technology known as computer telephony integration (CTI). With a soft phone, calls can be made from the PC to a phone line, from a phone to the PC, or between soft phone-enabled computers
