The PN code of period 242-1 chips used in IS-95 systems at a chipping rate of 1.2288 Mchips/sec.

NOTE: This PN code is called the long code because its period is so much longer than the period of the pilot or short PN codes which is 215 or 32,768 chips. At the chipping rate of 1.2288 Mchips/sec the time period of the pilot code is only 262/3 msec or exactly 75 periods every 2 seconds.

This code on the reverse link is used for spreading meaning identifying the mobile station. It is 42-bit code. On the forward link it is used for data scrambling.
Note:
Let’s discuss from now on IS-95A and IS-95B and take the delta portion covering CDMA-2000 later. Understanding will be clearer since it is an evolutionary standard from IS-95Ato CDMA-2000.
