A Gateway GPRS Support Node (GGSN) is a network node that acts as a gateway between a GPRS wireless data network and other networks such as the Internet or private networks.

The Gateway GPRS Support Node (GGSN) is a main component of the GPRS network. The GGSN is responsible for the interworking between the GPRS network and external packet switched networks, like the Internet and X.25 networks.

From the external networks’ point of view, the GGSN is a router to a sub-network, because the GGSN ‘hides’ the GPRS infrastructure from the external network. When the GGSN receives data addressed to a specific user, it checks if the user is active. If it is, the GGSN forwards the data to the SGSN serving the mobile user, but if the mobile user is inactive, the data are discarded. On the other hand, mobile-originated packets are routed to the right network by the GGSN.

GGSN is basically Gateway GPRS Support Node it is used and the card which support GGSN is on the selected BTS in Pakistan because in rural areas there is no GPRS facilities

GGSN(Gateway GPRS Support Node) provide an interface for connecting to external netwroks e.g PSTN.

The Gateway GPRS Support Node (GGSN) is a primary network element in the cellular network using GPRS.

The GGSN provides a number of services, for example:

Forwarding of IP packets between the SGSN and a PDN.
Session management, that is, a connection between a PDN and a SGSN, including dynamic IP address allocation
Charging. The GGSN collects charging information for each MS, such as the external data network usage and GPRS network resources.
The GGSN has the following interfaces with other GSM and WCDMA System network elements:

The Gi interface connects the GGSN to PDN, allowing exchange of signaling and payload.
The Gn interface connects the GGSN to SGSNs within the same PLMN, allowing exchange of signaling and payload.
The Gom interface connects Operation and Maintenance (O&M) equipment and billing systems to the GGSN, making it possible for an operator to communicate with the GGSN.
The Gp interface connects the GGSN to SGSNs in other PLMNs, allowing exchange of signaling and payload.
