Spread-spectrum is basically a method by which energy generated in a particular bandwidth is deliberately spread in the frequency domain, resulting in a signal with a wider bandwidth. These techniques are used for a variety of reasons, including the establishment of secure communications, increasing resistance to natural interference and jamming, and to prevent detection.
And if talk in regard of telecommunication then "This is a technique in which a (telecommunication) signal is transmitted on a bandwidth considerably larger than the frequency content of the original information."

The spectrum which we are talking about here is the band width which had been assigned to a particular telecom service provider. The idea behind the spread spectrum is the way in which this spectrum is used to handle the callers or the users of the particular service. The spread spectrum virtually uses the entire spectrum to transmit between users. For example when a user makes a call to another person, the frequency which he uses cannot be traced at all , it could lie anywhere in the vast bandwidth. Hence the term Spread Spectrum. CDMA uses this technique.
